Truth and beauty are at the heart of Wendy Pedroso’s sculptures - the simple human truth and unpretentious beauty expressed in the un-posed, unselfconscious movements of the people who surround her. This candid truth and in-born beauty is her inspiration. Capturing these things sculpturally is her passion. Wendy’s sculptures are not grandiose or monumental. Rather, through skilled rendering of subtle gesture and visual inflection she creates an unembellished expression of the simple joys and pleasures of life. With accomplished eye and hand she captures those small, unremarkable moments within which the truth and beauty of the lives around her are found. In the process Wendy explores each subject’s personality, creating a work of art that effectively encapsulates that individual's character. |

Wendy may begin with an image clearly in mind, or she may let the image evolve in response to the interplay between artist and subject. Either way, the pose that she chooses to execute is a reflection of Wendy’s clearest and most positive perception of the person, and the life, before her. Wendy has sculpted since childhood. However, she did not come to bronzes until after she’d completed college. She finds that each new piece presents its own, often complex, set of challenges, so the work never becomes routine. Whether she’s mastered a new challenge or working to master one, she always finds the work exciting. The production process starts with photos taken of a common life activity. Wendy then determines the scale of the piece and builds an aluminum armature, posing it to suite. Then she layers plasticene on the armature and imagines the basic structures of the body. Once the piece is built up, Wendy refers to her photographs and applies her tools to sculpting and refining the surface. When she is satisfied with the quality and finish of the sculpture she takes it to a foundry where a mold is made and the piece is cast in bronze. A base is added to the finished product. |
